The New Testament of the Holy Bible provides four different narratives of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These narratives are related to the preaching of Jesus Christ. These narratives are called as Gospels. These Gospels have their own importance. The Gospels have their own importance in the Christian tradition. The Gospel of Matthew and John have many similarities and differences. The Gospel of Matthew is the first Gospel in the New Testament of the Bible. The book does not bear his name but the Christian belief affirms that Matthew was the author of the first Gospel. John is the author of the fourth Gospel. John was the disciple of Jesus Christ. The essay will discuss the similarities and differences among the Gospel of Matthew and John and their respective portrayal of Jesus Christ. John and Matthew both have various similarities among their statements and verses throughout the Bible. The Gospel of Matthew is related to the Hebrew Bible. This Gospel bears approximately sixty eight references from the Old Testament.

Same way, there are fourteen references of Old Testament in the Gospel of John. Both the Gospels declare Jesus as the king of Jews. The significance that points towards the crucifixion of Lord Jesus Christ can be easily found in the religious book, verses such as “King of the Jews” (Mt 27;37, Jn 19;19), the mentioned verse states that Jesus was crucified with two other men on his sides. It is same as the Jesus of Nazareth as declared in the Old Testament. In the Gospel of Matthew, he mentioned at various places that “Son of David”, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: / ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel” (Matthew 2:5-6). Same way John had stated about Jesus “Has not the Scripture said that the Messiah is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” (John 7:42). This statement could be compared with the Old Testament where 1 Samuel says “The Lord said to Samuel, “I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”
