Season 5 Episode 17 of MTV’s Catfish is the choice for analysis in this assignment. Andrea, Alex and Andrea are the major characters in this episode and it was telecasted on August 31, 2016. Catfish denotes a person who aims to create fake individual profiles on the social media taking other’s pictures or personal details into account to trick the users/connections. Andrea Russett’s profile is being duplicated by third parties and profiles of people belonging to her family (mother, father, sister, brother) are also created to establish the connections across. The hosts in this episode of Catfish call up the legit individuals who were known to have faced the effects or conversations from the fake profile. They enter into an investigation. Alex is one person who has been dating Andrea online through her fake profile. It was a female who tried to duplicate or catfish Andrea’s profile out of selfishness and she has also misused the pictures. The team of hosts along with Alex and Andrea rush up to the city to catch her red handed and find out the reasons of such instances. The way the people on the episode are distorted is through the investigations and real time study by Nev and Max. While Andrea realizes that her profile is faked, she is known to the hosts.
When they deepen their study, they split the relationships and people involved in the conversation. They distort their original identity after the co hosts explain the situation and ask for the experiences of victim – Alex. Beautiful girl is the hash tag used by the hacker or the catfish and Andrea popped into the list (TV Series Online, 2016). The catfish then chose her to create fake profile and that is how she conversed with her boyfriend Alex to create that relationship. The damages are enormous. First of all, they morph/ steal pictures and manipulate them depending on their intentions. Secondly, they converse with people and put the entire family at stake by creating individual fake profiles of every family member. Thirdly, when people are catfished, they are exposed to unknown relationships as created by catfish. Sometimes, catfish decides the life of the person being faked on the web. Hence, the identity and credibility of the actual person are disrupted. In certain cases, people fail to realize or even accept when the real person comes into the picture and so is the case of Alex as he believed that he has been dating the real Andrea online for a long time. Indirect pleasure is enjoyed by the catfish.
