Selfie has become a ubiquitous phenomenon. No matter how old you are, what job you have or what sex you are, you may have some pieces of selfies in your smart phone or at least you have seen selfies on your Facebook homepage. In 2013, Oxford English Dictionary claimed that they chose “selfie” as the word of the year, proving how popular and how influential the phenomenon is. Brandt conducts a research on calculating how many selfies people take every day and he finds the number is amazingly 93 million per day “just Android models alone” (Brandt, 2014).Selfie is a newly coined word, specifically referring to “a fast self-portrait, made with a smart phone’s camera or other devices, and immediately distributed and inscribed into a network” (Saltz, 2014). However, to record the image of self is not a new invention of people in the 21st Century. Self- portrait is an important and independent genre in the field of painting. Moreover, as photography was invented and developed in late 19th Century, self- photography also aroused a lot of concern and was practiced by many artists.
Though both selfie and self- photography are used to delineate photos containing the image of the cameraman, there are some inner differences of them. One of the most direct ways to differentiate self- photography from a selfie is whether both arms of the cameraman appear in the photo. A self- photography in most cases are created with the help of tripod, and thus the composition of the picture is more free and the content of the picture is richer compared with as selfie. There may remain some stereotypes on self-photography works and selfies. For instance, most selfies are regarded as “silly, typical, boring” in which “guys flex muscles and girls make pouty lips (duck face)” while self-photography are considered an important branch of photography art with “artistic characteristics” (Saltz, 2014). Notably, some most famous self- photographers are female and in many people’s mind, women are much fond of taking and posting selfies. This provides me an interesting entry point to cut into the topic of selfie. This essay would like to conduct research on comparing the two types of self- photography works and reveal the differences and common points of them.
