The purpose of this essay is to analyze and discuss critically my identity and how it has been shaped by my membership and associations with different groups. I will be drawing on my background and my personal experiences that have had a great influence on my social construction. I have presented the insights of my self-refection and hope this helps my friends and faculty at ASU to know more about my country and culture.

I did my schooling in an educational organization that believed in having students of different nationalities mix in specially designed educational programs. There were spring and summer programs at my school that gave us a chance to meet diverse set of people. This gave me an opportunity to understand cultures that are different to mine and it also gave me a chance to understand how the western world views my nation. This interaction that was encouraged in my school days has changed my understanding of the values of the world. There is a common misconception that the western world is too liberal for its own good. I was advised by my family when I took my studies with ASU that I will have to ensure that my traditional values are kept and that I do not get too carried away with the liberal western values. However since I was schooled in a background that already gave me a good first hand experience I know that despite differences in culture, educational arena is almost the same everywhere. It does not matter if we come from liberal or conservative cultures we are intensely competitive and while our background gives us strength there is always much more to learn from another’s culture that could add to it.
