Surgery process involves a manual process and applies different materials to enhance successful surgery. However, instruments used during surgery have a significant adverse impact to the patients such as reoperation, and even death among other consequences. The adverse effects and the need to enhance patient safety provide the rationale for understanding the role of nurses in influencing safe perioperative practice. Cases of retained surgical items in the patient’s body often account for the highest number of adverse cases often leading to death. Research indicates that addressing patient safety can be achieved through a variety of factors such as surgical count process that should be conducted in any surgery. Counting the surgical instruments reduces the chances of patient safety problems associated with surgical processes (Freitas, Silveira, Clark & Galvao, 2016).

Herlehy (2011) identifies different ways in which nurses can enhance patient safety in perioperative practice that include the values of communication, innovation, quality, and collaboration. The first method of communication is critical in promoting patient safety in the perioperative environment, due to the complex environment the nurse’s work in which also impacts to patient care. Effective disclosure in a nurse as members of the surgical team helps them in coordinating surgical interventions and delivery of quality care to patients.Communication also enhances the chances of minimizing common and avoidable risks as well as establishing shared vision and commitment among the caregivers. Hence, safety issues related to patients in perioperative nursing can be addressed through good communication practices.
