Industrial revolution was marked not just by the mass specialisation of labours and industry, but also by the mass specialisation of managerial activities primarily consisting of the way labour management relationships were handled. The inside contract system was similar to the putting-out system, which also persisted on the difference between the capitalist pay and the worker wages. But it was not identical since the inside contract system was the central element in the later factory system. The prime issue in the inside contract system was the tension between the ownership of knowledge and capital, and a constant conflict between the two. The capitalist owned capital, but not knowledge and therefore contracted to craftsmen and relied on them and the craftsmen could not own the products due to their lack of capital. Thus, it is leading to a conflict over the ownership of the major part of the profits and product ownership. For better and consistent survival, the capitalists could have had to accept the rise of the workers importance due to their possession of knowledge, because capitalists could not invest into failed ventures or on those, where there were no knowledgeable workers producing quality products.

The planning in inside contract system was about worker planning and not capital planning, because ownership and capital without knowledge had not authority and value, and craftsmen planning of knowledge dissemination were the central part of the system. With time, the possession of knowledge could have made it worthwhile and could have partnered capital had it persisted for a longer period of time until the development of supporting and external markets and infrastructures. The incessant quest of capitalists to overpower the craftsmen and make them dependent with their possession of knowledge was gaining grounds, because the craftsmen were not able to negotiate their progress on merely the possession of knowledge when they lacked capital to fulfil the bare minimum necessity from the retail market.
