Lean management system is to ensure that evolving consumer needs are met. Agile supply chain management system is created to handle volatility and unpredictability. Both these models are dynamic models in supply chain system. Hybrid model of supply chain system is followed in Unilever. Unilever has a consumer centric quality management system nevertheless it also understands the importance of dealing with unpredictability. Hence the company like many contemporary companies follows the hybrid model (Waters & Rinsler, 2014.). In 2000, the company adopted a “path to growth” model. Unilever had numerous brands and products that were becoming redundant. Company dropped the number of brands to 400 in this policy in lieu of meeting consumer requirements. The company followed this lean system of management. To increase resources or asset use, reduce inventories and to increase quality of service, Unilever embraced a new policy known as the Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR) model (Waters & Rinsler, 2014). This policy was a more agile policy to ensure optimal usage of resource and production. By this program the inventory and cross-docking system was reduced, shelf availability increased. This led to 10% reduction of inventory stored in warehouses, increased sales by 5% owing to more availability of products in the retailers and 10% overall increase in accuracy and delivery (Waters & Rinsler, 2014). Unilever has also embarked in a number of green initiatives to reduce wastage of products and optimization of resources. Production, manufacturing, distribution and retail process in the supply chain are ensured to reduce the carbon footprint of the product (Waters & Rinsler, 2014). Due to adhering of these protocols the company was able to increase brand equity among the consumers while reducing costs.
To address the issues in its production policy and to reduce carbon footprint. Company should involve itself to find more durable, cost-effective, safer raw materials. Supplier standards regarding environment should be made even more robust and effective (Zairi, 2012). There should be better quality hybrid materials that are eco friendly. The company to ensure quality of the deliverables and green initiatives should address packaging challenge design. This can be achieved using newer digital technology and investing more in green energy renewable sources.
Worker policy of Unilever had caused substantial damage to the brand of the company in many markets. There is a need for the company to continually monitor and review its worker policy to ensure that issues similar to Vietnam do not occur.
Kodaikanal issue is actually due to the activities of the company in the past decade. There should be cleaner efforts undertaken by the company to ensure they rectify the past environmental hazards caused by the company.
Reducing the number of brands and focusing on key deliverable products will ensure long-term sustenance of the company.
Product development should not be standard practice. The company should manoeuvre it according to the local community needs.
