The story which would be discussed is “Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. In this, the author talks about an age old tradition which the villagers are following blindly. The tradition has not logic behind it, but every year the villages gather together to participate in this weird tradition. The lottery, as the name suggests is the lottery of a human being who would lose his life on the very day when the lottery is played. The story shows lot of violence and also reveals some heart pounding facts about this custom. The person who chooses a slip with the black dot is stoned to death even when he or she is not at any fault other than picking a clip with a black dot from the black box. The most disheartening fact which is portrayed is that the public forgets everything about the individual who draws a slip with the black dot, whether he is a friend, relative or a good natured person etc., but is only concerned about throwing stone at the person till he or she dies of wounds. The story brings out the lacuna in the social system where people still believe in superstition without questioning the logic. The children of the villagers, on the lottery day, roam about the village to gather stone which would be used to throw at the person picked by the lottery and murder him.

Little do the children know what they are contributing to?This short story brings out the fact that the family members care about each other, but only until the lottery. Once the lottery is against any of the family member, they also turn a back towards the person and are interested in stoning him down to death. For example, in this short story, Tessie was considered to be a good wife, but when she draws the slip with the black dot, even her husband does not feel bad. In fact, he was showing that slip to the crowd. He was not at all bothered that his wife would be stoned to death. The characters are so blind with superstition that they are not able to see beyond the fact that the person holds some values in their own lives. For example, once Tessie shows that she had the marked paper, her husband and her children turn to her as any other villager and equip themselves to stone her down to death. Thus, the characters in the short story do not guarantee loyalty to each other till the lottery is in action.
