Till now Agrofuel satisfies only a small portion of the total energy consumption. It satisfied less than 1 percent of the energy consumption. However to produce such less energy approximately twenty three percent of the US coarse grain production and approximately forty percent of vegetable oil production of Europe was utilized. A study done by the US National Academy of Sciences says that even if all the production of corn and soyabeans for US is used then it would satisfy approximately twelve percent of the US demand for gasoline and approximately six percent of the US demand for diesel. This is a very small amount considering the fact that whole of the nation’s production is being used to produce biofuel. This raises a serious question on whether using crops to produce biofuel would be sustainable and instead it could be put to better use since a large section of the world population is still suffering from hunger (Doornbosch & Steenblik, 2008).
Efforts can be made to use other renewable sources of energy. In addition to the usage of crop a vast amount of land and water would be used to produce the crops. This can have a very negative impact on the food security of the population as well as on the environment. World is seeing a shortage of food with the increasing population. Thus using crops to produce these biofuels is a decision which needs to be given a deep thought (Goldemberg & Guardabassi, 2009).
