The author is engaging with many scholarly and public debates. Firstly, the author presents how images are being produced to serve as markers of Canadian identity. These images are landscapes of Canada, the farmlands, agricultural areas, tourist areas and more. All of these areas are seen to be representations of identity and culture. This could be understood in terms of engaging the citizens to conserve natural resources within the country. The author makes use of an example document, something like a public service announcement PSA. Images of people enjoying in beaches is represented in parallel to desert lands. The representations exist to advocate that people have to start using the land and caring for it in a way that enables better conservation. However, land is considered more of an asset, an economic strength and this is repeatedly reinstated in the work. WJT Mitchell’s assertion that land is a focal point for formation of identity is brought into the forefront of discussion, especially in the ways that land and culture is connected.

However, even in this representation, the author critiques that it is only done to showcase a paternalistic attitude towards marginalized groups. Land’s true value measured in economic terms is just one end of the equation. Where land is called as a gift, it goes on to show that it has multiple values for the beholder. When an image representation is given, it is more often considered to be an authentic way to represent the geographic locations and its issues etc. Another idea the author engages in is that of authority in the case of a documentary viewpoint. The author argues that a documentary viewpoint is almost always accepted as being right. However, this need not always is the case. It is necessary to be critical of such image representations. They need not be always true either. Now in presenting this viewpoint, it could be said that the author is contributing to ideas of critical discourse analysis in media and other forms of information feeds.
