World Trade Organization (WTO): It is an international organization that formulates rules of trade between member nations. It performs the function of handling trade disputes, monitoring trade policies, helps developing nations with technical assistance and works in cooperation and coordination with other trade organizations through WTO agreements which are duly negotiated and signed and ratified by parliaments of many nations of the world. It came into existence on 1 January 1995 and is having its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland (Wang, 2000). The main goal of WTO is to ensure smooth, free and predictable trade between member nations.
Here the topic of discussion is “Why did China want to join the WTO, and what were the obstacles they faced?”. The data collected for this study is from varied sources such as articles, journals, books and free sources available online.
China, after 15 years of diplomatic struggle, became the full-fledged member of WTO on 11 December 2001. The formal membership of China with WTO was ratified by 142 member countries of WTO and with the due approval of government of China. China for proving itself as an open economy for international competition and trade had to undergo a long set of negotiations and had to satisfy the trading partners of WTO especially United States and European Union. The main aim of China by being a member of WTO is to reform the market-oriented economic system of the country and make it flourish for the long-run. Being a member of WTO was a moment of pride and honor for China, as in the history 11 December 2001 will be a witness for China’s reform as an open economy and strengthening the process of modernization through international trade (Ying-ying, 2007).
