The Greatest Happiness principles speak how individuals should act in a manner that would promote maximum happiness for the largest number of people in any scenario. This also means relinquishing personal happiness based on ethics. John Mill concept of utilitarianism basically promotes this concept of living life based on ethical principles for the larger benefit of society. The theories are directed towards altruism and self-abnegation. According to Mills actual happiness can be derived only from large number of beneficiaries. But this leads to the question of what acts are righteous and what actually benefits the society in the long and short term. This issue has confused people from time immemorial. There are some questions to this theory as everything cannot be black and white. In some cases acts of selfishness and deceit could actually be beneficial for others. Some philosophers say that this theory cannot actually be practiced, as the practical implication of this theory would result in more misery to the individual. This is where the complexities and confusion of this theory in real time practice arises. Film noir generally look for the darker sides of the human nature. Some theories even provide validation for acting on self-interests and not looking out for others. In some movies the main protagonists seem to essay roles that cater to darker side of human nature. In the movie “In the Mood for love”, Su and Chow suspect their respective partners of having affairs and being deceitful towards them. In spite of Su and Chow having mutual attraction to one another they do not act on their feelings owing to the ethical principles. They do not want to behave like their partners even though they are not being true to them. This has a utilitarianism aspect to it. It can be understood that they choose to abnegate their feelings in spite of having honorable true feelings for the other. They feel their platonic relationship would be tarnished if they chose to be lovers instead of being true friends who respected each other. They both felt that their love for each other is more than being a couple. They choose to remain unrequited in love even when both partners have essentially good intentions. This movie had a strong utilitarianism message as propagated by Mill.
