“The all-purpose picture plane underlying this post-Modernistic painting has made the course of art once again non-linear and unpredictable. What I have called the flatbed is more than a surface distinction if it is understood as a change within painting that changed the relationship between artist and image, image and viewer” Steinberg presents the horizontal picture plane as being one of the most prominent creations or shift in the modern art world. Pre-established categories of painting, according to him, are thrown out because of the shakeup that the horizontal lineup introduced. The picture plane shift that is observed by Steinberg is called the flat bed analysis. He gives it this name because the picture is understood as spread out on a flat bed. It is this important characteristic that differentiates it from the works of the past.
The works of the past had a preconceived plane where an art work was drawn from head to feet. The work was a conception of the world and the erect human posture was the basis for this kind of representation. Painting of artists such as Pollock who poured and dripped pigment on canvas and allowed them to flow vertically created a sense of confronting and conformation with the natural human posture. According to Steinberg, from around the 1950s, change was observed in the techniques in the works of artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Dubuffet. They had undertaken a picture orientation that no longer relied on the dominant vertical. The picture orientation hosen in such cases were of the opaque flatbed horizontals. The flatbed picture was similar to surfaces such as a table top, a studio floor etc.
