Compassion, social consensus, ability to express one’s self and empathy are the integral pillar for a healthy society. Compassion and Empathy flowers love and kinship in the society. They run deep in to the society and explore the depth of the human dignity. The essence of Red Azalia is the bitterness of the survivalist, cruelty and the conflict that the protagonist has with others and what efforts she puts to develop, friendships ultimately lead to the inference of what female strength is and represents. The communist China then was a place devoid of compassion and empathy. The way little Min was forced to testify against her favourite teacher clearly depicts that there was no place of compassion and empathy. People were forced to live on farms where they were virtually trapped. People attacked each other in power struggles. Min’s friend Little Green lost her sanity and eventually drowned after the forceful exposure of her relationship treated as a violation. In the midst of these, Min found compassion and empathy in Yan, her best friend. Their relationship which began with Min’s distant admiration had gradually evolved to a beautiful friendship. She looked up to Yan as a Chinese heroine under communism. She was a commander who went to great lengths to protect her principles which portrays her dignity but on the other side she jeopardised her own standing for her friendship with Min. Yan had a strong emotional bond with Min and was almost a mother to her. Thus Yan was the perfect example of compassion and empathy (Buchwald P., 2003 pp 307).
The other interesting aspect of the Red Azalia is the relationship of Anchee Min with the perpetrator and the defender of the rights. On one side, she was a true believer of Mao but on other side she looked up to Yan, who too being a commander compromised her stands for her friendship with Min. Li from Mao’s Last Dancer, without having social consensus of his stay in the United States, not only expressed his perseverance and defended himself against the Chinese government and emerged victorious in his career but also could maintain a healthy binding with his homeland.
