An analytical frameworks construction in an academic work almost invariably begins with a deep and critical discussion on the existing theoretical perspectives and arguments supporting the same. Regional integration theory, the customs union theory and the more contemporary theories are presented by the author. Through these theories, the author presents some interesting insights. The web of regional interdependence that is caused by regional economic and social integration is stated to be the reason for the loss of sovereignty, “Which would gradually remove layers of sovereignty from the state and redirect the sentimental attachments of individuals towards regional organizations” (7). If a spillover effect as the author claims is what causes the associations in the first place, why the individuals would be sentimentally attached to the regional formations. Although what the author states sound true in reality, the wordings make it seems paradoxical. Research works and theories that are identified and discussed point to the research gap the analytical framework attempts to fill in. As an example, consider Cai’s discussion of the theoretical ponderings of Nye on how to better strengthen the regional integration theory. Joseph Nye proposed a process mechanism where emphasis will also be placed on external actors. Where the impact of external actors is included, then the weakness of regional decisions making could be conditioned. However, Cai argues that although researchers such as Nye present the ways that external factors could be included in order to alleviate the problems of regional integrations, the root cause of why nations go regional in the first place is not addressed (8). Here the author structures and builds up the significance of the analytical framework before getting to it. A similar theory presentation and breakdown style is also seen in the end discussion of the custom union’s theory.
