In 2003, eminent group of art and architectural historians began a research on “Modern Australian art and architecture” and the result was an explicit understanding of the creative expression of the twentieth century Australia. The approach of the researchers were revisionist as their basic premise was that in order to understand modern art and how modernist designs fused into every contemporary design in Australia, it is important to study modernism and its impact across a range of media such as design, photography, art, architecture and advertising.
Rejecting all traditional understandings, they emphasize on three themes- internationalism, abstraction and inter disciplinary practice.
England was at the centre of the revival of the neo gothic style (1840-1930) from the medieval times, designed by SC Brittingham. The old arts building of Melbourne University represents a neo gothic style with detailed decoration around the windows of the medieval era.
Art Deco style (1930-1940) first originated in France and travelled to America and Australia thereafter. The most prominent art deco architect in Australia was Harry Norris who took regular trips abroad to study and observe the evolving trend and introduce the same in his homeland. Art deco evolved in two phases, the first being the geometrical and the second the angular phase.
The main feature of Modernist Style (19803-1940) is being functional, minimalistic and geometric. These structures consist of bold horizontal spandrels for maximum support and long windows for maximum light, providing for specific needs rather than imitate nature. Oakley and Parkes, emerging modernist style architects in Australia created a structure never seen before in terms of functionality, spacing and technique.
