Group technology is a concept where activities are grouped together based on similarities. Task can be standardized and these can be implemented as cells. Group technology draws on similarities in both design and manufacturing attributes. In this case study it can be seen that the functionalities will have similar design (Slack et al, 2007) and manufacturing attributes, hence can be grouped together as the required cells. Some of the common function integration can be done at a lower level of assembly itself and more specific function integration for the product ranges can be incorporated later. Medium to high variety of production and low to medium volume of production will be supported by cellular manufacturing as noted in research field. In addition to meeting the objectives needed to plan the layout, the cellular layout also provides the following advantages (Irani, 1999)
• Machine changeovers are simpler in the case of the cellular manufacturing (Reid, et al, 2007). This is essential as a machine failure may impact on the product range.
• Workers training period will be very much reduced and the layout planning will also be easily adjusted to by workers.
• The cellular divisions ensure that parts are made faster.
• In-process inventory is a problem in the case of a low to medium volume production facility; this will be reduced in the case of cellular manufacturing, materials handling is also reduced quite significantly (Meyers, 2005).
• Automation of task using CAM and CAD, this will improve the overall production efficiency (Liveratore et al, 2003)
• Cellular layouts combine the best of a process and a product layout. It will have the flexibility of the former and the efficiency of the latter
• It allows for the integration of dissimilar machines also in individual cells.
• There is reduced setup and transit time.
