Personal interpretations of the above critical analysis
In the first paragraph, David Bevington has explicitly interpreted the scene with having infused with numerous soliloquies. A soliloquy is nothing but a speaker’s way of interaction with the audience and this habit of Hamlet, the protagonist, tells us that he likes to be self- contended and dos not publicize his thoughts or opinions. Not just him but other characters of the play are also using this literary device. This use of soliloquies is a great discovery of its times and Shakespeare is accredited for his genius on this device. He has infused this element numerous times in the play which depicts his in-depth knowledge of theatre and drama. The use of this device definitely makes the scene and even the play more interactive and keeps the audience abreast of the happenings of the play.
Secondly, C.S Lewis has enlightened with his three critical evaluations of the character of Hamlet. He has pointed out the nature of delay in Hamlet which is evident in the scene where he refrains from murdering his enemy. The way he reasons out such situations is also remarkable as he has done in this scene. He does accept that he is a ‘procrastinator’ and is a coward. This statement though showcases another streak of Hamlet’s character and helps the audience know more about the protagonist.
Thirdly, John Dover Wilson has analyzed the relationship between Ophelia and Hamlet. According to him, Hamlet falters n portraying his love for Ophelia. This is perceived in him may be because he has seen his mother as a betrayer to his father and generally he mistrusts women. But for Ophelia he knows that she is different and would be with him and accompany him in his trial times. But as he is a little inexpressive he is not able to convey his actual feelings and emotions to her and she also believes her father and decides to leave him.
