There are a number of reasons for the poor sanitation facilities in the slums of Mumbai. The very first and the major problem is the issue of population. The slums consist of over 7 million people. All of them lives in very small homes which are mainly in the form of huts and in most of the huts there are around 8-10 people in a small room. There isn’t a proper space for separate sanitation. Moreover, these people work in the industries where the people are paid much, so that they can have proper facility for the sanitation.
Another reason for the poor sanitation is the problem of water scarcity. The quantity of available water in Mumbai is not enough to sustain all the people comfortably. According to the analysis it is assumed that the water supply in Mumbai is only 65% of the requirement (Murthy, 2012). There is an abundance of the waste water in the streets, dirty and unkempt drains and the streets are littered with the garbage and animal dung and faeces. Every day in the slums of Mumbai, around 20,000 tons of rotting garbage is left on streets. The kind of stench that is created by these attracts the flies leading to the spread of a number of diseases. According to the survey reports, it has been found that around one third of the population of the slums do not go to the toilet and their activities are in the open only.
