特质理论主要是谈论什么是好领导。它谈论的是一个真正的领导者应该具备的人格特质或特点。特质理论是倡导领导者出生而非成就的最古老的理论之一。但是,在目前的情况下,这并不成立。一个领导者被视为一个能够发展某种品质和特质的人,从而成为一个有效的领导者。其中的一些特质包括正直,同理心,自信,决策能力等等。人的特征表现在他思维过程的反映中(Lane&Maznevski,2014)。没有什么特殊的特质可以区分一个领导者和一个正常的个人。正常人与领导者之间的唯一区别在于领导者在一段时间内发展了必要的特质。
行为理论:
这个理论讨论领导者的行为方式,然后根据他们的行为模式区分领导者(Robinson,Lloyd&Rowe 2008)。根据行为有三种类型的领导者。他们是:

What is leadership?
Values: A good leader is analytical, conceptual, directive and consistent. The major values include people oriented, reflective, task oriented, and risk oriented, practical, systematic, practical and balanced.

Trait theory

Contingency theory
Power and Influence theory
Trait Theory:
The trait theory mainly talks about what makes a good leader. It talks about the personality traits or the characteristics which a true leader should possess. Trait theory is one of the oldest theories which advocated that leaders are born and not made. However, in the current scenario this does not hold true. A leader is seen as a person who can develop certain qualities and trait in order to become an effective leader. Some of the traits include integrity, empathy, assertiveness, good decision making abilities etc. The traits of the person are exhibited in the behavior which is the reflection of his thought process (Lane& Maznevski, 2014). There are no special traits which differentiate a leader from a normal individual. The only difference which lies between a normal individual and a leader is that the leader develops the necessary traits over a period of time.
Behavioral Theory:
This theory discusses the manner in which the leaders behave and then differentiates between the leaders based on their behavioral patterns (Robinson, Lloyd & Rowe 2008.). There are three types of leaders based on the behaviors. They are:
Autocratic Leaders
These kinds of leaders take decisions without consulting the team and do not ask about their point of views. This style of leadership is effective when quick decisions need to be made. In such cases, the leader speaks to the complete team and concludes on the possible outcome. This is an appropriate leadership style to achieve result fast. However, this type of decision making sometimes leaves the team in mayhem as they are not able to give their inputs and they need to accept what is dictated to them (Cameron, Quinn, DeGraff & Thakor, 2014).
