The review work on the Le Corbusier’s chapel at Ronchamp starts off with, James Stirling’s discussion on the modernist forms that were being made use of in those times. The architect states that the modern movement had divided art and technology. USA was building functionalist architecture that was more of adapted industrial processes and in the case of Europe an early humanist method seems to be present still. In the adoption of modernism and functionalist, the chapel of Le Corbusier is an example from Europe and this is seen in the way Stirling calls the chapel a plastic building, “chapel by Le Corbusier may possibly be the most plastic building ever erected in the name of modern architecture”.According to James Stirling, the chapter is situated in a landscape where the viewer would be able to see woodlands reminiscent of England and Wales. The place is situated in an area that could be accessed only by dust roads and dirt tracks. It is approachable from the crown of a hill. Stirling states that the place looks almost ethereal. When one climbs the hill the chapel suddenly comes into their vision and this adds to the mystic quality.

It is like a sudden encounter that someone has with unnatural architecture akin to the Stonehenge and the dolmens. Stirling’s arguments and rhetoric style is almost blunt and to the point. This is a style that can be observed in his writing from other primary sources. The words used in portraying and discussing the plan and even the way the planning on the documents are shown, it is almost as if Stirling is being abrupt in his communication. In many ways this architectural review also appears to show similar elements, some of abruptness in the way Stirling presents that the ethereal chapel might surprise someone with its elements. It is as if no other interpretation or word would be appropriate for describing the chapel.Le Corbusier’s works has been described by other authors as incorporating elements of femininity. This style is also seen in the case of the Chapel, in the way the veneer and the walling materials are used. In the case of this review, Stirling writes that the Chapel has been whitewashed all over and has a veneer form to its walls that makes it look like papier-mache.
