Positive freedom, as it refers to the self-control or possession of power to a person to make his or her ideas and goals into reality, is necessary in situations where the society is expecting to produce leaders and have the non-leaders follow a righteous path so that they do not fall into an error in their personal life. This means that in a democratic society, the growth of people is governed by the individual’s personal capabilities to bring out a change or be the change in specific areas like art, business, literature, music, etc. (Gorr, 1989). These endeavours require one to have differentiated quality which makes the individual propel forward beyond its old-fashioned and pre-conceived notion of his or her own capabilities. This is possible when the individual tries to push himself to excel in a specific area, and if everything was available to him without any obstacle, there would be a no-show of the productive qualities which remains hidden in individuals and this in turn also fails to direct and inspire others to take up their own goals seriously and build from there.
When one has the liberty of acting in a way which is taking an individual to his or her destination, the individual will be required to gather personal strengths available inside and also try and accumulate the external resources which can help in the journey. Positive freedom is also attractive in terms of developing one’s character (Crocker, 1980)as the individual would have to face many tribulations to reach a stage of perfection. This would automatically rub the individual against a lot of rough patches and convert him into a gem with shining qualities.
