The company which is one of the largest steel producing companies is known for its positive approach towards innovation and modernization. Tata Steel was established in 1907 by JN Tata at Jamshedpur, India. In the early 1980s it started modernization programs for its employees. The company took a major stride towards modernization by initiating KM initiative in the late 1990s. At that point of time, Tata Steel was the only manufacturing company in India which chose to implement KM. The company management expected KM to be a growth driver by establishing intellectual assets, which will eventually become a competitive advantage for Tata Steel (Arora, 2002).
