The concept of value chain is based upon the process view of an organization. Also a service or a manufacturing organization is viewed as a system, consisting of various subsystems and each in turn consisting of outputs, inputs and transformational processes. All these consist of the consumption and acquisition of resources which are – money, materials, labour, buildings, equipment, land, management and administration. The profits and costs are determined on the way the value chain activities are done. In Porter’s value chains, the primary activities consist of Operations, Inbound Logistics, Outbound Logistics, Service and Marketing and Sales. The secondary activities consist of Human Resource management, Procurement, Infrastructure and Technological Development (Kalpan, 1989).

Looking back at the question of the source of value for a start-up business, a major factor for creating value especially for start-up businesses is networking. Building strong contacts and relationships along with undergoing partnerships and support can boost the investments made to a start-up. Networking also includes the aspect of sharing information which is reciprocal and on-going in nature. Networking can be abused by using people to acquire jobs and can be used as a process to make cold calls. Networking has gained significance of late since it is not merely about getting acquaintances; it is about using the already existing contacts to become the basis of a wide network.
